General FAQs Bespoke Process FAQs Ready-to-Wear FAQs Hat Etiquette & Traditions FAQs Visiting Winchester FAQs Glossary of Terms FAQs About Simon FAQs Why do clients enjoy visiting Winchester for their consultation? Many clients enjoy the experience because Winchester feels special, welcoming and easy to make a day of. Between the historic streets, independent boutiques and excellent places to eat, it often turns a hat appointment into a genuinely lovely outing and a memorable part of your special event planning. How do I travel to Winchester? Winchester is well connected by road and rail, with direct train routes including Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and London. From the train station, the studio is a short taxi ride or about a 25-30-minute walk up the hill. There are also local bus services that can drop you at the end of Dean Lane, about 5-10 minutes away. Is there parking at the studio? Yes. There is ample free parking immediately outside my garden gate, with a short walk through to the studio. Are there good restaurants and cafés nearby? Yes. Many clients enjoy eating out before or after their appointment, and Winchester has a wonderful selection of cafés and restaurants. Along Jewry Street and near The Guildhall, you will find a great variety of cuisine options, and The Ivy Brasserie on the High Street has quickly become a well-known choice. For a countryside feel, The Plough in Sparsholt and The Running Horse in Littleton are both popular, as well as the Lainston House Hotel, which is also very close by. Is the studio accessible for customers with mobility needs? Yes. There is spacious parking immediately outside, and access is via a fairly level paved Indian Sandstone path which includes a couple of very shallow steps, then a small step up into the studio itself. If you require any additional support, please mention it when booking so I can make suitable arrangements. Do you see clients from outside Hampshire? Yes. Clients travel from all across the UK for consultations, and Winchester’s transport links and local attractions make it a convenient and enjoyable destination to spend a day or two in, making the most of their hat ordering experience. Are there hotels within easy reach? Yes, there are several options if you would like to stay overnight nearby. Lainston House Hotel is very close, and there are also notable options in town, such as Hotel Du Vin on Southgate Street. There are also several pubs with rooms, both in town and on the outskirts. Many clients find that an overnight stay turns the visit into a relaxed, unrushed shopping experience that becomes an enjoyable part of their event planning. Can I collect my hat while visiting Winchester? Yes. Many clients arrange to collect their completed hat during a Winchester visit, and it can be a lovely way to enjoy the city before heading home. If you would like to do this, please may I suggest arranging it in advance so we can time it perfectly around your plans. What should I see while I’m in the city? Winchester is rich in culture and history. Many visitors enjoy Winchester Cathedral, the Great Hall, and the River Itchen walk, as well as the city’s charming streets and independent shops. • Millinery Glossary | Marvellous Millinery Winchester

Millinery glossary from Marvellous Millinery in Winchester, Hampshire: clear definitions of hat shapes, materials and trims to help you choose with confidence. Millinery Glossary FAQs Hat and Fascinator Terms Explained I explain common millinery terms in plain English so you can understand hat styles, materials and fittings with confidence. If you’re new to occasion headwear, this glossary makes it much easier to choose a wedding hat that feels comfortable, flattering and appropriate. It’s a quick reference you can dip into before booking a consultation or ordering online. Next steps: If you’re not sure where to start, see my Wedding Hat Advice . For colour confidence, visit Colour and Outfit Matching . If you’re considering commissioning a hat, read my Bespoke Consultation Process , then explore my Bespoke Hat Portfolio . If you need something sooner, browse Ready-to-Wear . If you’d like personal help, please use my Contact page . General FAQs Bespoke Process FAQs Ready-to-Wear FAQs Hat Etiquette & Traditions FAQs Visiting Winchester FAQs Glossary of Terms FAQs About Simon FAQs What is a Consultation? A consultation is a private appointment with me (in my Rose Garden Studio or virtually online) where we explore hat shapes, styles, colours, trims and fit before you commission a hat. Consultations usually last about an hour. What is Virtual Consultation? A virtual consultation is a remote appointment using video and photos. It covers style advice, measurements and colour approvals, and I can post swatches if needed. What is a Fitting? A fitting is a second session with me in my Rose Garden Studio to check the balance, tilt, comfort and security of your hat, with minor adjustments as needed. What is Sustainable Sourcing? Sustainable sourcing, for me, means making thoughtful choices that reduce waste and favour local, well-made materials. I prioritise UK suppliers to keep transport miles down, choose natural, durable materials where possible, and order in small batches to avoid overproduction. I re-use off-cuts in samples and trimmings, and I pack finished hats in recyclable, plastic-free packaging. My aim is simple: a beautifully made hat, crafted in Winchester, with as little waste as possible. What is Millinery? Millinery is the art and craft of designing, constructing and finishing women’s hats and headpieces. What is Proportion? Proportion is the relationship between the crown, brim and trim and the wearer’s features, hairstyle and outfit. In my studio, I consider proportion carefully so the hat flatters you and harmonises with your overall look. What is Balance? Balance is the visual and physical “rightness” of a hat on the head, so it looks natural and feels secure. What is a Crown? The crown is the main body of the hat that sits on the head. Its height and shape influence the overall proportion. What is a Brim? A brim is the projecting edge that frames the face. The width affects balance, proportion and visibility. What is Headpiece Base (Diameter)? The headpiece base is the solid foundation of a headpiece. For Royal Enclosure eligibility at Royal Ascot, the base must be at least 10 cm (4”). What is a Percher or Perching Hat? This is a small, sculptural hat worn forward or to one side at a flattering tilt, usually secured with elastic and/or a comb. What is a Pillbox? A pillbox is a small, brimless, rounded hat worn either on the back of the crown or perching slightly forward and held securely with elastic - a timeless and chic look. What is a Hatinator? A hatinator is a fairly new term, describing a hybrid between a hat and a fascinator, typically being a shallow saucer-style base on a metal headband. It can be adorned with an abundance of decorative trims or kept simple. What is a Fascinator? A fascinator is a light headpiece mounted on a comb, clip or Alice band. Many formal dress codes do not classify it as a ‘hat’ if the base (the area touching the head) measures less than 10cm (4”). What is Veiling? Veiling is a fine net used as trim or a partial face covering to add texture and classic elegance. Birdcage veiling is very popular because of its open weave and self-supporting nature, allowing designs to feature visual volume without very much extra weight. What is Trim? Trim means the decorative elements added to a hat, such as ribbons, silk bands, bows, veiling, crystals, curls and feathers. What is Sinamay? Sinamay is a lightweight, open-weave fibre that feels crisp, airy and sculptable. I usually create my hats with three layers of sinamay to strengthen the form and give the piece a refined finish. What is Felt? Felt is a dense material (often wool or a fur blend) suited to sculptural hat shapes for cooler seasons. What is Bias Binding? Bias binding is a fabric strip cut on the bias (diagonally across the fabric grain) and hand-stitched along an edge (for example, a brim) to give a smooth, curvaceous finish. What is a Headband? A headband is a slim band (often springy metal wrapped in ribbon) used to support and stabilise lighter headpieces or hatinators. What is a Comb? A comb is a small toothed fixing, sewn into the hat to help anchor it into styled hair. What is Millinery Elastic? Millinery elastic is a fine elastic hidden under the hairline at the nape of the neck, to discreetly secure percher and perching pillbox styles. What is a Hat Box? A hat box is a cardboard protective container, supplied with acid-free tissue for safe storage and travel with your new hat. What is Acid-Free Tissue? Acid-free tissue is archival tissue paper used to support a hat’s shape and help prevent discolouration during storage. What is Aftercare? Aftercare is guidance on storing, cleaning and maintaining a hat so it keeps its shape, colour and trims after you’ve worn it to your event. What is the Travel Advice for hats? My travel advice is to carry hats as hand luggage and to keep boxes flat as much as possible. When requested, I supply my hats in ‘travel boxes’ that normally meet the acceptable dimensions as carry-on luggage for most airlines (please verify with your own particular carrier), ensuring that all of the delicate parts (e.g., the inside of the bow lobes) are protected and supported by the acid-free tissue paper in which I pack your new hat. Alternatively, many customers have opted for a smaller perching pillbox-style hat to wear to their daughter’s destination wedding, and after taking it home in the hatbox I have provided, they transfer it into a plastic food container and nestle it into the centre of their luggage, so that it can travel safely in the hold of the aircraft. What is the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot? The Royal Enclosure is the most formal enclosure at Royal Ascot, with the strictest headwear rules for base size and style. What are the dress code rules for hats at Royal Ascot, especially in the Royal Enclosure? In the Royal Enclosure, formal race-day standards require a hat or headpiece base of at least 10 cm (4 inches), and fascinators are not permitted. All of my Ready-to-Wear and many of my bespoke hat samples are designed to meet the Royal Enclosure Dress Code for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. What is Face-Shape Guidance? Face-shape guidance is matching styles to features, for example a percher or pillbox suits many faces, and wide brims can balance taller statures. What is a Mother of the Bride Hat? A Mother of the Bride hat is an elegant, event-appropriate design that complements the outfit without upstaging the bride. It is normally the most eye-catching and memorable hat at the wedding. What is an AI Lifestyle Image? An AI lifestyle image is how I combine photography and AI imagery so you get both accuracy and inspiration. I photograph every hat that I create in my Rose Garden Studio in Winchester, so you can see the actual piece from several angles before you buy. From time to time, I also use carefully controlled AI-assisted lifestyle images that place my real hat designs onto a model in a garden, country house or city setting, simply to help you imagine how a style might look when worn. The hats are always real designs from my Winchester studio - only the model and background are computer-generated. Whenever an AI-assisted lifestyle image appears on my website, I clearly label it, and you will always see traditional studio photographs of the actual hat on the same page. I focus on traditional craftsmanship and thoughtful design, helping you discover a hat that feels beautifully individual and perfectly suited to your event. Where is Marvellous Millinery located? I work from my Rose Garden Studio at 4 Mornington Drive, Dean Lane, Winchester, SO22 5LR, about a mile or so from Winchester city centre. I am located near Waitrose on Stockbridge Road. If you need help finding me, please telephone me, and I will gladly guide you here. Do I need to make an appointment to visit the studio? Yes, please. Consultations are by appointment only, so I can focus on you and prepare suitable samples. Same-day appointments may be possible. To arrange, please telephone 07968 337446 or use my website contact form . Are consultations private? Absolutely. Consultations are confidential and always one-to-one in my Rose Garden Studio here in Winchester. Only one appointment is scheduled at a time, so you can relax, try on samples, and enjoy complete privacy. How far in advance should I book my appointment? Please may I suggest booking at least two to three months before your event, particularly if you want plenty of choice with colours and trims. During peak wedding and Royal Ascot seasons, early booking is essential because availability can become very limited. What are your payment options? For bespoke commissions, I ask for a 50% deposit when you place your order, which allows me to obtain the materials needed for your commission and secure the making time in my studio, with the balance payable when you collect your new hat. For online Ready-to-Wear purchases, I accept payments by Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. What makes Marvellous Millinery different from other hat designers? I blend classic British craftsmanship with a contemporary eye for proportion, colour, and finish. Each hat is individually designed and made, with unique trims that give every piece its signature character. Customers often value the friendly, collaborative, creative experience as much as the hat itself. If you’re weighing up your options, you may enjoy reading Why Buy from Simon ? Are there lavatory facilities at the studio? Sorry, there are no customer toilets available here. The nearest toilet with public access is at Costa Coffee, located near Waitrose at the bottom of Dean Lane, approximately a 5-minute drive or a 10-minute walk away. Do you create wedding hats for LGBTQ+ weddings and ceremonies? Yes. I welcome everyone, including LGBTQ+ weddings and ceremonies, and will always use the name and pronouns you provide. Your consultation is private and one-to-one, though you’re welcome to bring a friend or relative if you wish. The studio is fairly compact, so I suggest a maximum of 3 people (plus me). Whether you are getting married yourself, a parent, or a guest, I will help you choose a ready-to-wear piece or design a bespoke hat that perfectly flatters you and complements your outfit and the occasion through careful proportion and precise colour-matching. If you need any adjustments for comfort or accessibility, please let me know in advance, and I’ll do my best to accommodate. Do you offer hats for 'destination' weddings overseas? Many couples are choosing to celebrate their weddings away from UK shores, and Marvellous Millinery has an exceptional service and advice for the Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom attending such occasions. I have specially sized hat boxes that can be taken onto the plane as 'carry-on' luggage, and I can advise which of the larger hats would be suitable to transport in this way (please check dimensions with your individual airline). Alternatively, smaller perching hats can be packed into a sturdy food container and stowed safely in the centre of your luggage for transport in the hold. Are your hats suitable for Royal Ascot? Yes. Many designs meet the Royal Enclosure requirements and are perfect for formal race days. I am happy to advise on current guidelines and help you choose a style that satisfies the dress code, while still expressing your individuality. I'm going to be a bride myself for the second time - do you have headwear suitable for me to wear at my own wedding? Certainly! I offer a range of hats and fascinators that are perfect for your second wedding or as a 'mature bride'. My collection features elegant fascinators, bejewelled headpieces and chic perching pillbox hats, all designed to complement a variety of wedding styles. You might consider a whisper of delicate veiling or a posy of pretty floral trims for a softer, romantic look. Each piece is carefully crafted to complement your bridal ensemble without overwhelming it, allowing you to celebrate your special day in style and comfort. What if I have never worn a hat before? You are not alone - many clients visiting my Winchester studio are first-time hat wearers. Once you try on a few flattering shapes and feel a well-balanced fit, confidence tends to arrive very quickly. By the end of the consultation, many customers understand how enjoyable it can be to wear the right hat. I explain the most flattering shapes and how I help you feel confident in my Wedding Hat Advice page. How do you use photography and AI imagery? I photograph every hat carefully in my studio from multiple angles, so you can see exactly what you are choosing, whether it is a one-of-a-kind Ready-to-Wear hat or a sample design from my bespoke collection. From time to time, I also use AI-assisted lifestyle images to help you imagine how a style might look when worn at a wedding or special occasion. The hats are always real designs, AI lifestyle images are clearly labelled, and you will often see traditional photographs of the real hat on the same page. Frequently Asked Questions What makes buying a hat from Simon different to buying off-the-shelf? For my bespoke service, I design specifically for you, not for a generic customer whom I’ve not met. I focus on flattering proportions, thoughtful colour-matching, and a secure, comfortable fit, so you feel beautifully put together and confident on the day. Do I need my outfit before I book? You can book a consultation before you have your full outfit, but I recommend waiting until your dress is confirmed. Ideally, bring your shoes and bag too, so I can match colours accurately and pull the whole look together. If you want to plan ahead, we can still try on shapes first and finalise colours once your outfit arrives. Can you work with glasses, a shorter hairstyle, or fine hair? Yes. If you wear glasses, I make sure the hat sits comfortably and works with your frames. For shorter or fine hair, I recommend styles that look balanced and use the right fixing so you feel confident all day. If you can, bring your glasses and tell me how you plan to wear your hair on the day. Do you offer both bespoke and ready-to-wear wedding hats? Yes. I create bespoke wedding hats and fascinators through one-to-one consultations at my Rose Garden Studio in Winchester, and I also offer a ready-to-wear collection in my online shop for those who need something sooner. How does a bespoke consultation work? I welcome you for a calm, pre-booked appointment where you can try on a wide range of sample styles and we talk through your outfit, your preferred level of statement, and how you want to feel. Then I design your hat around you, with the finishing details chosen together. Can you colour-match my hat to my outfit? Absolutely. I match your hat to your outfit with care so everything looks considered in wedding photographs, and I can help you choose shades that complement your colouring as well as your dress. How do you make sure the hat stays on all day? I design every hat to feel secure, comfortable and well-balanced. In your fitting, I check how it sits when you move and choose the best fixing for you, such as a discreet headband, comb or elastic. I will also share simple hair-prep tips so it stays put from start to finish. How far in advance should I get in touch? As a rule, earlier is always calmer, especially for spring and summer weddings. Once you know your outfit, I recommend contacting me so we can plan your consultation and your making time without any last-minute rush. Looking for more answers? Show Me Look Book Why Real Wedding Photographs Matter When Choosing Your Hat There is something quite different about seeing a hat in a real wedding setting rather than simply on a mannequin or in a studio. These photographs show how my hats look in natural daylight, against real church doorways and garden marquees, and alongside the dresses, suits and flowers that make up the day. You can see how a wide brim frames a face in a group photograph, how a perching pillbox sits elegantly beside a bride, and how colour-coordinating really does make a difference when everything comes together. Many of my customers tell me they found this gallery genuinely helpful when deciding on the style and scale of hat that would work for their occasion. Some arrived at their consultation having already spotted a colour combination or trim detail they loved. Others simply felt reassured that a hat could look natural, comfortable and beautifully balanced throughout a long day. If you see a design you particularly like, please do mention it when you get in touch. I can use it as a starting point and create something similar in the colours of your own outfit - or we can take the elements you love and develop them into something entirely new. Colour-matching that looks “meant to be.” Many ladies arrive at my Winchester studio feeling uncertain about how to coordinate their hat with a block-coloured dress, a patterned fabric, or a soft, ‘in-between’ coloured outfit. By the end of the consultation, we have found a combination that works beautifully in natural light and will photograph elegantly on the day. Several reviewers kindly mentioned this as the detail that made the biggest difference. A comfortable, secure fit from the ceremony to the last photograph. A hat that wobbles, pinches or needs constant adjusting quickly becomes a distraction. I create every hat to feel balanced and light, secured with a discreet headband, comb, or hair elastic, so you can greet guests, embrace your family, and enjoy the whole day without giving your hat a second thought. Comfort is one of the most frequently praised aspects in these reviews. A calm, enjoyable consultation. I work hard to ensure that ordering your wedding hat is one of the enjoyable parts of the planning - an experience to be cherished. My one-to-one appointments at my air-conditioned Rose Garden Studio here in Winchester are unhurried and relaxed. You will work directly with me throughout, and many reviewers describe the experience as a memorable highlight. A truly individual hat. Because every bespoke hat is created specifically for one customer, you will never see the same design on someone else at the wedding. That sense of individuality - knowing your hat was made just for you - is something my customers mention time and again. Trusted by Mothers of the Bride and Mothers of the Groom Across Hampshire and Beyond Since establishing Marvellous Millinery in 2011, I have had the privilege of creating hats for ladies attending weddings and events across Winchester, Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and much further afield. Most of my customers travel specifically to visit my Studio for a personal consultation, often making a day or even a weekend of their trip, and a good number return for subsequent family weddings or Royal Ascot. I never take a personal recommendation for granted. When a customer tells a friend, family member, colleague or even her neighbour about their experience, it means the world to me - and it is the reason so many of my enquiries begin with the words, “my friend came to you for her hat, and she said I absolutely must come to see you too!” Share the Love New customers REALLY appreciate reading reviews—it's very reassuring and makes them feel confident about placing an order with me. But perhaps the best part of commissioning a hat from him is that he brings such a delight to the whole experience, and clearly aims to make his clients feel relaxed, confident and attractive in their chosen outfit. He is so patient if you are undecided and takes such care to ensure you feel happy with your whole look, inviting you to bring along your dress and shoes so colours can be perfectly matched. I am looking forward to my next excuse to visit his studio! Thank you Simon, for taking away the anxiety about choices and making it fun from start to finish.” Penny Bullough - 5* Google Review “Wonderful service and a totally fabulous end result! Would highly recommend x” Louisa Revolta - 5* Google Review “Simon designed and created the most stunning hat for me. It was innovative, beautiful and the attention to detail was just amazing. I had so many compliments about it at the wedding. I would recommend Marvellous Millinery to anyone! Such a talent and such a wonderful service!” Annie Tatnall - 5* Google Review “Having purchased my hat, a joyous experience, I initially trotted off to Epsom Races. Simon actually remembered I also had another occasion when I would be able to wear my beautiful hat again. If you want to feel fabulous with confidence a hat from Marvellous Millinery is definitely for you!” Alyson Elms - 5* Trustpilot Review “Marvellous Millinery is very aptly named and is a truly bespoke service from start to finish, which is not always easy to find nowadays. The whole process of working with Simon is fantastic and he shows an incredible attention to detail, beginning with your outfit to make sure the final hat complements and enhances what you’re wearing. The colour matching is incredible. He immediately makes you feel at ease. I highly recommend Marvellous Millinery to anyone who is considering a hat for an occasion. Simon is extremely skilled and professional.” Lucy Francis - 5* Trustpilot Review “I always go to Marvellous Millinery when I need a hat for a special occasion. I’ve now had several hats (with matching accessories) designed and created by Simon at Marvellous Millinery and have no reservations about recommending him… Simon has incredible attention to detail and amazing design ideas. It’s clear that he wants his customers to really love and enjoy wearing the hats he makes for them. The process from beginning to end is always stress free and easy, You don’t have to know a lot about hats or even know what suits you, he’ll guide you through the whole process. Simon has so much knowledge that I enjoyed every minute in his beautiful studio as much as wearing the hats themselves.” LK Ward - 5* Trustpilot Review Frequently Asked Questions Are these reviews genuine? General FAQs Bespoke Process FAQs Ready-to-Wear FAQs Hat Etiquette & Traditions FAQs Visiting Winchester FAQs Glossary of Terms FAQs About Simon FAQs Who is Simon Meanwell-Ralph? I am Simon Meanwell-Ralph, a British millinery designer based in Winchester, Hampshire, UK. I design and handmake hats for weddings, specialising in designs for the Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom, as well as creating unique pieces for Royal Ascot and other special events such as Royal Garden Parties and Investitures. How did Simon become a Millinery Designer? I came into millinery through a background in art and design. I established my brand, Marvellous Millinery, in 2011, and I have developed a style that blends sculptural creativity with wearability, so hats feel elegant, flattering, and timeless. What does Marvellous Millinery represent as a brand? Marvellous Millinery stands for individuality, craftsmanship and hats that make the wearer feel special. I root the brand in British elegance, with a distinctly personal Winchester spirit. I create each piece with care so each one feels personal, polished and beautifully made. Are Simon’s designs traditional or modern? Both. I respect classic millinery traditions, while also designing with a contemporary viewpoint, so my work can suit someone who loves timeless elegance as well as someone who wants a bolder statement. Where does Simon find inspiration? I often find inspiration through nature, art, design and architecture, and from exploring exhibitions and beautiful places. My surroundings in Winchester, especially the gardens near my studio, regularly influence the colours and mood of my seasonal collections. What makes Simon’s hats distinctive? People often recognise my hats for their balance of flattering shapes, thoughtful proportions and fine finishing. I also enjoy adding character through details such as elegant bows, handmade silk flowers, or delicate, trimmed and curled feathers. Does Simon make every hat himself? Yes. I create every hat myself, selecting materials and finishing the details to suit the wearer and the occasion - so the level of craftsmanship stays consistent throughout. This attention to detail can’t be watered down, because then I am the person who meets with you, writes down your order and creates your hat to your specifications - so your hat will turn out exactly as we envisioned it together when you placed your order. What is Simon’s approach to bespoke design? I believe the best bespoke designs come from collaboration. I listen carefully, guide the choices, and shape the design around your outfit and personal taste, with comfort and confidence always at the centre of the finished piece. What is the Rose Garden Studio? The Rose Garden Studio is my private working space at my home in Winchester. I use it for designing, meeting clients, and making each piece by hand, and I hold my one-to-one appointments here so you receive my full attention during your consultation. How can I contact Simon or book a consultation? I only hold consultations by appointment, so I can give you my undivided time and attention. To book an appointment in Winchester, please use my Contact page . General FAQs Bespoke Process FAQs Ready-to-Wear FAQs Hat Etiquette & Traditions FAQs Visiting Winchester FAQs Glossary of Terms FAQs About Simon FAQs What does “bespoke” mean at Marvellous Millinery? Bespoke means that I design your hat just for you, considering your outfit, proportions, personality, and your role at the occasion. I guide you through each decision in a private consultation, so your hat feels uniquely made for you. Why order a bespoke hat? A bespoke hat gives you a truly individual design for a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, especially if you are the Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom. Customers often tell me that they have found it hard to achieve the right balance of style, colour and confidence from a limited off-the-peg High Street selection, whereas a visit to my studio lets us create something together that complements your outfit beautifully and feels uniquely made for you - so you can feel confident that no one else will be wearing the same hat. What happens at a bespoke consultation? I begin with a relaxed, creative appointment at my Rose Garden Studio, where we explore shapes, sizes, colours, trims and finishes together. We’ll refine what suits you, agree on the design, and make sure it feels right for your occasion. To help me colour-match accurately, please bring your outfit or a fabric swatch, and the shoes you plan to wear. Consultations usually last about an hour, and I can see customers seven days a week to fit in with your diary. If you’d like the full step-by-step overview, please read my Bespoke Consultation Process . Are consultations free of charge? Yes. All consultations at my Winchester Millinery Studio are free of charge when either considering ordering a Bespoke hat from me or looking at purchasing a Ready-to-Wear piece. How long does the bespoke process take? Most bespoke commissions take between six and ten weeks. That timeframe allows me to slot you into my making schedule, source original materials, create your design and hand-finish it properly. Please may I suggest booking as early as possible, particularly in spring and summer when demand is at its highest. For planning tips and a sensible timeline, see my Wedding Hat Advice . What should I bring to my consultation? Please bring your outfit (or a fabric swatch), plus your shoes and bag if you have them, as seeing the actual fabrics ‘in the flesh’ is very helpful. Information about the plans for the day's arrangements and ideas for your hairstyle can be useful too. If you wear glasses, please bring them along so we can agree on a flattering design that feels both secure and comfortable. Do you provide a colour co-ordinating service? Yes. Colour co-ordination is central to what I do, and I help you select the right tones across bases, trims and fabrics. Please bring your outfit or a fabric sample so I can compare colours accurately under natural light in the studio. For more guidance on coordinating tones across your outfit, see Colour & Outfit Matching . Can you include fabric remnants from my dressmaker? Often, yes. If your dressmaker can spare a small piece of fabric, I may be able to incorporate it into trims or a hand-covered detail so the hat and outfit harmonise beautifully. I’ll advise what’s feasible once I’ve seen the fabric and design. I am happy to liaise directly with your dressmaker regarding fabric quantities and timings, if you wish me to. Using this service brings your outfit together perfectly because it uses the same material/dye batch, etc. Having said that, I also have a very wide variety of silk, organza, and velvet colour samples in my studio, so that the flowers and trims can be made from fabric I supply to decorate your new hat. My outfit colour is tricky, can you match it? Yes, and this is where a bespoke approach helps enormously. Many hats rely on layering multiple tones to create either a strong, uniform shade or a more nuanced “in between” colour, and I also use shade cards and a wide range of silks and fabrics to refine the match. If your shoes and dress are different colours, we can choose a hat shade palette that ties your outfit together, rather than focusing on a single colour. You may also find Colour & Outfit Matching helpful for choosing a flattering shade palette. How much is the deposit for a bespoke commission? I ask for a 50% deposit at the time you place your order. This lets me secure the allocated making time in my studio and obtain the raw materials I need for your commission. You may pay by Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, online banking transfer, cheque or cash. Are Bespoke Orders changeable or returnable? No. Because I make everything specifically for you, I do not offer returns or exchanges once the deposit has been paid and the order has begun, or after the order is completed. Your hat is made to your unique specification, so it would not suit another wearer. How is the price of a bespoke hat calculated? I calculate the price individually, based on the size and complexity of the design, the materials and trims, and the hours of hand-making required in my Winchester studio. Every sample I have is clearly labelled with the price that it would be if you were to order that exact design ‘as is’, but in your bespoke colour choices. I discuss additional options clearly during our consultation, so you can choose a direction that suits your budget. The price confirmed when you place your order is the total cost - there will be no hidden extra charges when you come to collect. • Royal Ascot Hats in Winchester, Hampshire | Marvellous Millinery

Bespoke Royal Ascot hats crafted in Winchester. Classic statement brims and playful headpieces, handmade by milliner Simon Meanwell-Ralph in Hampshire. What sort of hat should I wear to Royal Ascot? If you’re attending Royal Ascot and want to look “Ascot” in the best possible way, I will design and make a bespoke hat or compliant headpiece that suits your enclosure, outfit colours, and confidence level. I create everything from delightfully extravagant statement pieces to sleek, classic hats with timeless polish, all made in my Winchester studio with comfort and a secure fit in mind. Important ordering note for Ladies Day My spring/summer lead time is 10 weeks. As a result, I ask that all bespoke orders for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot be placed with me by the end of March, please. Arrange a Consultation Royal Ascot style has two Millinery Moods, and I love them both! Royal Ascot is one of the rare occasions where you can lean into millinery with proper joy. Some of my clients want an unapologetic celebration of colour, texture and movement. Others want a quietly confident, beautifully tailored look that feels classical and correct. I design for both, and I’ll help you choose which direction feels right the moment you put it on. I offer a wide range of exciting bespoke hat options that are available to order in hundreds of different colour combinations . The fun, frivolous, “let’s make an entrance” side of Ascot This is where millinery becomes pure theatre, most elegantly. If you want a hat that makes people smile (and earns you a few compliments on the lawn), I can take you in a bolder, more playful direction while keeping the finishing refined. Ideas I often explore for this look include: A harlequin flutter of colourful silk butterflies, dancing across the crown and brim An exaggerated oversized bow, sculpted so it looks dramatic but still beautifully balanced in photographs An abundance of hand-set crystals that catch the light as you move Exciting, jazzy colour combinations that pick up your shoes, bag, lipstick, or even a patterned dress For many ladies, this is the day to really go for it - Royal Ascot gives you the perfect excuse! The sleek, elegant, classically dressed side of Ascot If you prefer a more traditional look, I will keep the silhouette clean and the styling considered. Think confident lines, impeccable proportion, and colour-matching that looks intentional rather than “nearly right”. This approach often suits: A large statement brim in a refined colour story A smooth, elegant finish with a single beautiful focal trim A timeless shape that looks graceful from every angle, especially in photographs It still feels special. It just whispers rather than shouts. Perching button bases and pillbox styles, small in scale and big in impact I sell a great many perching button bases and pillbox-inspired styles for Royal Ascot, and they are far more versatile than people expect. They make a perfect springboard for drama because they sit neatly and comfortably, while allowing the trims to do the talking! In the Royal Enclosure, Ascot’s own guidance allows a headpiece or hatinator as long as it has a solid base of at least 4 inches (10 cm). All of my perching button bases for Ascot meet that minimum, so they can work beautifully even for very traditional clients who still want a compliant headpiece rather than a wide brim. Here’s why they work so well: Comfort: they feel light to wear and easy for a long day Practicality: they suit hosting or attending a private box, where space and movement can be limited Versatility: they can look sleek and minimal, or they can become the foundation for a showpiece And creatively, they are a joy. I can build them up with: Twisting trimmed feathers spiralling upwards for height and movement Festooned bows for impact without the bulk of a huge brim Crystals and sparkle to catch the eye with every turn of the head They are fun, practical, and surprisingly flattering. Dress code and enclosure guidance, without the stress Dress codes vary across the enclosures, so I always recommend checking the official guidance for your specific ticket before you finalise your outfit. If you tell me which enclosure you’re attending, I will design within the guidelines and steer you towards something that feels appropriate, comfortable, and unmistakably you. When should I order my Royal Ascot hat? As Royal Ascot is traditionally held in June each year, the best time to begin is early . It gives you far more choice and keeps the overall experience much more enjoyable. A sensible approach: January to February: get in touch and book a consultation in Winchester if you’d like one By 31 March: confirm your Ladies Day bespoke order (my firm cut-off) April onwards: I will complete your hat with enough time for calm final checks and collection If you’ve left it late, I can still help If you are inside my bespoke lead time during the spring and summer rush, I may not be able to take on a made-to-order Ascot commission. In that case, my ready-to-wear collection can be a lovely solution, subject to availability. A brief history of the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot The origins of the Royal Enclosure can be traced back to 1807 when an area was reserved exclusively for family, guests and the Household of King George III to view the first running of the Gold Cup. The Royal Enclosure as we know it today was established in the mid-nineteenth century when the Emperor of Russia, Nicholas I, visited Ascot for the first time as a guest of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. The concern raised from an impromptu descent into the Winners’ Enclosure by the Emperor, the King of Saxony and Prince Albert to examine the winner of the Queen’s Vase, prompted authorities to enclose the area in front of the Royal Stand in 1845. Excluding the Royal Stand, this area immediately became the most exclusive part of the racecourse. This excerpt reproduced here by kind permission of ascot.com Arrange a Consultation Royal Ascot is one of my absolute favourite events to design for . It has that wonderful mix of tradition, glamour and pure summer fun, and it gives me permission to be a little more daring with scale, colour and sparkle. I genuinely love the planning stage with my treasured customers, chatting through their plans, outfits and all those finishing touches that make their whole look feel “just right”. If you’d like to create something special for Ascot, I would be delighted to help you enjoy the build-up and arrive feeling beautifully dressed for the occasion. Frequently Asked Questions When is the latest I can order a bespoke hat for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot? My spring/summer lead time is 10 weeks, so please confirm your bespoke order with me by 31 March for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. If you contact me after that date, I may still be able to help, but it will depend on my studio schedule and the complexity of the design. Can I wear a perching button base or pillbox style to the Royal Enclosure? Yes. A perching button base or a pillbox-inspired style can work beautifully for the Royal Enclosure, provided it meets the dress code requirement of a solid base of at least 4 inches (10 cm). All of my Ascot-ready perching bases meet the minimum size, and I will always guide you so your final choice feels both correct and stylish. What is the most comfortable style to wear all day at Royal Ascot? Many ladies find a perching button base or pillbox style the most comfortable option, especially if they are hosting or attending a private box where space and movement can feel limited. These styles feel light to wear, sit securely, and still allow for dramatic trims such as feather spirals, sculpted bows and crystal details. Do you make dramatic “fun” Royal Ascot hats as well as classic ones? Yes. Royal Ascot is one of the few occasions where you can lean into millinery with real joy and exuberance! I make everything from sleek, elegant statement hats in refined colourways to playful designs featuring oversized bows, a flutter of colourful silk butterflies, hand-set crystals, veiling, and sculptural featherwork. I’ll help you choose a look that feels perfect for you, just with a little more pizzazz! Can you colour-match my hat to my dress, shoes and bag? Yes. Precise colour-matching is one of the most important parts of what I do. If you can bring your outfit to my Winchester studio, or share clear photographs (or post swatches), I will build a colour story that looks intentional and beautifully coordinated, both in real life and in photographs. I have my Ascot tickets but not my outfit yet. Should I wait? Yes, please wait until you have your dress, and ideally your shoes as well. I can only colour-match and choose the right scale once I can see the actual outfit you've decided on, so you'll avoid any guesswork and end up with a beautifully coordinated Ascot look. Do you have ready-to-wear hats for Royal Ascot if I’ve left it late? Yes, absolutely. • A Brief History of Hats

From ancient Egypt to modern millinery, hats have symbolised elegance and self-expression. Discover bespoke designs inspired by history and crafted for today. A Whimsical Tour of Hat History Tracing Its Journey from the Earliest Beginnings to the Present Day I’ve always been fascinated by the stories behind hats. From ancient times to the modern runway, hats have stood as symbols of status, style, and sometimes pure whimsy. Let me take you on a quick jaunt through some of my favourite milestones in hat history. Ancient Beginnings Some of the earliest evidence of hat-wearing comes from ancient civilisations like the Egyptians. They favoured head coverings for practical reasons, such as protection from the relentless sun. Yet even then, artistic flourishes began to emerge—ornamental bands, delicate embroidery, and subtle plumes hinting at a desire for beauty as well as function. I love to imagine an exquisitely carved feather perched atop a pharaoh’s head, a precursor to the elegant trims we still see in fine millinery today. The Medieval Point Fast forward to medieval Europe, and hats became a defining feature of social standing. The iconic hennin - a tall, conical hat with a flowing veil was the ultimate statement piece for noblewomen. Though we might find it a little theatrical today, it set the stage for millinery as a form of self-expression. When I design a sculptural, structured hat for a mother of the bride who wants to make a grand entrance, I see hints of that same medieval drama - elegance, confidence, and a touch of the exotic. The Rise of the Derby In the Victorian era, hats flourished as emblems of refinement. Gentlemen wore bowler hats (or derbies), while ladies adorned their heads with elaborate bonnets trimmed with ribbons, lace, and exotic feathers. This was a golden age for millinery, when a hat wasn’t just an accessory but an absolute necessity. I often find myself poring over vintage photographs from this era, utterly captivated by the intricate craftsmanship. The detailing, the flamboyance, the delicate layering of fabrics - all serve as a reminder that millinery is truly an art form. 20th Century Revolutions Each decade of the 20th century brought its own defining silhouette. The 1920s saw the sleek, close-fitting cloche, a hat that framed the face with Gatsby-esque elegance. The post-war 1950s revived feminine glamour with extravagant wide-brimmed hats, while the 1960s embraced minimalism with the now-iconic pillbox hat, made famous by Jackie Kennedy. During this time, hats were no longer just a practical requirement but a conscious style statement. Milliners became sought-after artists, their designs gracing the pages of Vogue and adorning the heads of royalty and celebrities alike. Modern Millinery Magic These days, hats are less about necessity and more about the joy of personal expression. Whether I’m crafting a dramatic sculptural piece for Royal Ascot or an elegant fascinator for a mother celebrating her daughter’s wedding, I know that a hat is so much more than just an accessory. It becomes a part of a woman’s story, woven into the fabric of cherished family moments. Each hat I design is infused with the traditions of the past while embracing contemporary elegance. I take immense care in the details- silk-swathed trims, meticulously curled feathers, hand-set crystals that catch the light. My clients often tell me how special they feel when they put on one of my hats, how it transforms their confidence and completes their outfit in a way nothing else could. And that, to me, is the magic of millinery. Final Thoughts Hat history is a testament to humanity’s endless love for beauty and individual expression. From ancient Egypt’s practical coverings to the high-fashion headpieces of today, millinery has always been about so much more than function. A finely crafted hat is a luxury, a statement, and often a treasured keepsake in a family’s history. When you choose a handmade hat, you are not just selecting an accessory - you are investing in a piece of art, designed with care, creativity, and a deep appreciation for timeless elegance. It is an honour to create these pieces, knowing they will be part of some of life’s most precious memories. And truly, isn’t it simply marvellous to be part of that legacy?
