These FAQs help you understand what happens at each step so you can commission a hat that suits you, your outfit and the wedding setting perfectly. Next steps: If you’re considering commissioning a hat, start with my Bespoke Consultation Process so you know exactly what to expect. Then explore my Bespoke Hat Portfolio and use Colour and Outfit Matching to feel confident with your outfit. For general guidance, see Wedding Hat Advice . If time is tight, browse Ready-to-Wear . General FAQs Bespoke Process FAQs Ready-to-Wear FAQs Hat Etiquette & Traditions FAQs Visiting Winchester FAQs Glossary of Terms FAQs About Simon FAQs What does “bespoke” mean at Marvellous Millinery? Bespoke means that I design your hat just for you, considering your outfit, proportions, personality, and your role at the occasion. I guide you through each decision in a private consultation, so your hat feels uniquely made for you. Why order a bespoke hat? A bespoke hat gives you a truly individual design for a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, especially if you are the Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom. Customers often tell me that they have found it hard to achieve the right balance of style, colour and confidence from a limited off-the-peg High Street selection, whereas a visit to my studio lets us create something together that complements your outfit beautifully and feels uniquely made for you - so you can feel confident that no one else will be wearing the same hat. What happens at a bespoke consultation? I begin with a relaxed, creative appointment at my Rose Garden Studio, where we explore shapes, sizes, colours, trims and finishes together. We’ll refine what suits you, agree on the design, and make sure it feels right for your occasion. To help me colour-match accurately, please bring your outfit or a fabric swatch, and the shoes you plan to wear. Consultations usually last about an hour, and I can see customers seven days a week to fit in with your diary. If you’d like the full step-by-step overview, please read my Bespoke Consultation Process . Are consultations free of charge? Yes. All consultations at my Winchester Millinery Studio are free of charge when either considering ordering a Bespoke hat from me or looking at purchasing a Ready-to-Wear piece. How long does the bespoke process take? Most bespoke commissions take between six and ten weeks. That timeframe allows me to slot you into my making schedule, source original materials, create your design and hand-finish it properly. Please may I suggest booking as early as possible, particularly in spring and summer when demand is at its highest. For planning tips and a sensible timeline, see my Wedding Hat Advice . What should I bring to my consultation? Please bring your outfit (or a fabric swatch), plus your shoes and bag if you have them, as seeing the actual fabrics ‘in the flesh’ is very helpful. Information about the plans for the day's arrangements and ideas for your hairstyle can be useful too. If you wear glasses, please bring them along so we can agree on a flattering design that feels both secure and comfortable. Do you provide a colour co-ordinating service? Yes. Colour co-ordination is central to what I do, and I help you select the right tones across bases, trims and fabrics. Please bring your outfit or a fabric sample so I can compare colours accurately under natural light in the studio. For more guidance on coordinating tones across your outfit, see Colour & Outfit Matching . Can you include fabric remnants from my dressmaker? Often, yes. If your dressmaker can spare a small piece of fabric, I may be able to incorporate it into trims or a hand-covered detail so the hat and outfit harmonise beautifully. I’ll advise what’s feasible once I’ve seen the fabric and design. I am happy to liaise directly with your dressmaker regarding fabric quantities and timings, if you wish me to. Using this service brings your outfit together perfectly because it uses the same material/dye batch, etc. Having said that, I also have a very wide variety of silk, organza, and velvet colour samples in my studio, so that the flowers and trims can be made from fabric I supply to decorate your new hat. My outfit colour is tricky, can you match it? Yes, and this is where a bespoke approach helps enormously. Many hats rely on layering multiple tones to create either a strong, uniform shade or a more nuanced “in between” colour, and I also use shade cards and a wide range of silks and fabrics to refine the match. If your shoes and dress are different colours, we can choose a hat shade palette that ties your outfit together, rather than focusing on a single colour. You may also find Colour & Outfit Matching helpful for choosing a flattering shade palette. How much is the deposit for a bespoke commission? I ask for a 50% deposit at the time you place your order. This lets me secure the allocated making time in my studio and obtain the raw materials I need for your commission. You may pay by Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, online banking transfer, cheque or cash. Are Bespoke Orders changeable or returnable? No. Because I make everything specifically for you, I do not offer returns or exchanges once the deposit has been paid and the order has begun, or after the order is completed. Your hat is made to your unique specification, so it would not suit another wearer. How is the price of a bespoke hat calculated? I calculate the price individually, based on the size and complexity of the design, the materials and trims, and the hours of hand-making required in my Winchester studio. Every sample I have is clearly labelled with the price that it would be if you were to order that exact design ‘as is’, but in your bespoke colour choices. I discuss additional options clearly during our consultation, so you can choose a direction that suits your budget. The price confirmed when you place your order is the total cost - there will be no hidden extra charges when you come to collect. I blend classic British craftsmanship with a contemporary eye for proportion, colour, and finish. Each hat is individually designed and made, with unique trims that give every piece its signature character. The nearest toilet with public access is at Costa Coffee, located near Waitrose at the bottom of Dean Lane, approximately a 5-minute drive or a 10-minute walk away. Do you create wedding hats for LGBTQ+ weddings and ceremonies? Yes. I welcome everyone, including LGBTQ+ weddings and ceremonies, and will always use the name and pronouns you provide. Your consultation is private and one-to-one, though you’re welcome to bring a friend or relative if you wish. The studio is fairly compact, so I suggest a maximum of 3 people (plus me). Whether you are getting married yourself, a parent, or a guest, I will help you choose a ready-to-wear piece or design a bespoke hat that perfectly flatters you and complements your outfit and the occasion through careful proportion and precise colour-matching. If you need any adjustments for comfort or accessibility, please let me know in advance, and I’ll do my best to accommodate. Do you offer hats for 'destination' weddings overseas? Many couples are choosing to celebrate their weddings away from UK shores, and Marvellous Millinery has an exceptional service and advice for the Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom attending such occasions. I have specially sized hat boxes that can be taken onto the plane as 'carry-on' luggage, and I can advise which of the larger hats would be suitable to transport in this way (please check dimensions with your individual airline). Alternatively, smaller perching hats can be packed into a sturdy food container and stowed safely in the centre of your luggage for transport in the hold. Are your hats suitable for Royal Ascot? Yes. Many designs meet the Royal Enclosure requirements and are perfect for formal race days. I am happy to advise on current guidelines and help you choose a style that satisfies the dress code, while still expressing your individuality. I'm going to be a bride myself for the second time - do you have headwear suitable for me to wear at my own wedding? Certainly! I offer a range of hats and fascinators that are perfect for your second wedding or as a 'mature bride'. My collection features elegant fascinators, bejewelled headpieces and chic perching pillbox hats, all designed to complement a variety of wedding styles. You might consider a whisper of delicate veiling or a posy of pretty floral trims for a softer, romantic look. Each piece is carefully crafted to complement your bridal ensemble without overwhelming it, allowing you to celebrate your special day in style and comfort. What if I have never worn a hat before? You are not alone - many clients visiting my Winchester studio are first-time hat wearers. Once you try on a few flattering shapes and feel a well-balanced fit, confidence tends to arrive very quickly. By the end of the consultation, many customers understand how enjoyable it can be to wear the right hat. I explain the most flattering shapes and how I help you feel confident in my Wedding Hat Advice page. How do you use photography and AI imagery? I photograph every hat carefully in my studio from multiple angles, so you can see exactly what you are choosing, whether it is a one-of-a-kind Ready-to-Wear hat or a sample design from my bespoke collection. From time to time, I also use AI-assisted lifestyle images to help you imagine how a style might look when worn at a wedding or special occasion. The hats are always real designs, AI lifestyle images are clearly labelled, and you will often see traditional photographs of the real hat on the same page. My career includes selling jewellery in prestigious retailers such as Liberty, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols in London . I have also managed contemporary art and design-led craft galleries, and produced my own jewellery collections. Through this experience, I learned something invaluable: discerning customers notice the small details and remember how you make them feel . I bring that same design discipline into millinery: proportion, balance, colour harmony, and a calm, personal service. Ever since I was a teenager, I have honed my lifelong passion for hats, joyfully turning it into my full-time profession by establishing Marvellous Millinery in Winchester in 2011 . I can work from photographs, fabric swatches, and simple measurements to create your hat at a distance - having said that, it’s always better to visit in person if you can. There really is nothing quite like trying on different shapes and seeing how each one changes the way you look and feel. But I do understand that this is not always practical. Traditional British special occasion style, made personal I love the heritage of British weddings - that sense of occasion, tradition, and “proper” dressing for a meaningful, memorable day. A hat completes an outfit in a way almost nothing else can. It frames the face, improves posture, and makes you look beautifully considered without saying a word. At the same time, I never want you to feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. - Match Your Wedding Hat to Your Outfit - Mother of the Bride Guide
Not sure which hat colours suit your outfit? Simon guides every Mother of the Bride through colour matching at his Winchester studio. Book a consultation. How do I match my wedding hat to my Mother of the Bride outfit? Matching your Mother of the Bride hat to your outfit is about harmony rather than strict rules. I recommend starting with your dress, then choosing a hat colour that either softly blends, complements an accent in the fabric or sits as an elegant neutral alongside it. Your shoes, bag and jewellery should all feel part of the same story. In my Winchester studio, we compare fabrics and hat materials in natural light so everything works beautifully together. A thoughtfully chosen hat is more than an accessory – it completes your outfit and helps you feel polished from head to toe. When the colours and textures of your hat, dress, shoes and bag sit comfortably together, the whole look feels calm, balanced and flattering in real life and in photographs. This guide explains how I approach colour and outfit matching for Mothers of the Bride and Groom here in my Rose Garden Studio in Winchester . Arrange a Consultation Why hat coordination matters When your hat and outfit are well-coordinated, everything feels intentional rather than accidental. The goal is not to dress you in a strict "uniform," but to create a look that reflects your personality and respects the occasion. Shows your sense of elegance and care Frames your face beautifully in photographs Unifies your dress, shoes, bag and jewellery Helps you feel confident on a very special day I’ve seen many mothers visibly relax once we find a colour combination that feels “right” for them and the wedding. Start with your dress Begin by choosing your Mother of the Bride outfit. Once we know the fabric, silhouette and overall look, it becomes much easier to decide whether your hat should quietly blend in, gently complement or provide a subtle highlight. Ornate or heavily patterned dresses often suit simpler hats in one or two tones Sleek, understated outfits can carry bolder hat shapes or more decorative trims A wide-brimmed hat can balance a structured or tailored dress Petite fascinators or perching hatinators work well with column silhouettes Soft, undulating brims flatter tea dresses and fluid fabrics If possible, please bring your dress to the consultation, or at least good photographs and any fabric swatches, so we can see how potential colours interact with each other. Choosing your colour approach There is no single “correct” way to match your hat and outfit. Instead, we can look together at how different approaches affect the overall mood of your look. Broadly speaking, most combinations fall into one of four groups: Matching tones – a cohesive, monochrome effect when hat and dress sit very close in shade - for example this is particularly apparent if I’m able to use remnants from your dressmaker to trim your hat with Complementary colours – related hues (such as navy with cornflower, blush with rose, champagne with soft gold) that blend gently without being identical Highlighting an accent – picking up a contrasting colour from a print or trim and using it in the bow, flowers or feathers Neutrals and metallics – complementary oyster, natural, grey or soft metallics that sit well with stronger colours and are easy to wear again During your appointment, we can look at these different approaches in turn so you can see which feels most “like you”. Matching different dress colours Navy and deeper blues Navy is a popular and very versatile choice for Mothers of the Bride. I often soften it with lighter blue trims, silver or soft metallic accents, or by using a paler base with navy details. This stops the outfit from feeling too heavy while keeping everything elegant and refined. Navy is also a great neutral to springboard accenting complementary colours from, especially those being used within the theme of the wedding. For example, pinks (either pale shell pink through to strong fuchsia or magenta) are lovely with navy, as are bright jades, greens and yellows, and shades of grey, ivory and natural. Soft pinks, blush and rose Blush and rose tones suit so many complexions. Very often, the most flattering results can come from working within a family of related pinks and nudes rather than aiming for a precise colour match. I may then introduce a gentle contrast, such as warm champagne or soft silver, to keep the look sophisticated, soft and beautifully balanced. Champagne, oyster and neutrals Champagne, oyster and similar neutrals create a very timeless effect. Here we can focus on gentle differences in tone and texture, perhaps using a slightly deeper shade for the hat band, bow or floral trims so the design still has definition in photographs - perhaps picking up on an accent colour you've chosen for your shoes or handbag. Prints and patterned fabrics With a patterned dress, it’s often best to choose two or three colours from the print and carry those into the hat. A neutral base with trims in one of the print colours usually works better than trying to mirror every shade in the fabric - again this can be determined by your shoe choice by highlighting a single accent shade. Balancing pattern, texture and shine Colour is only one part of the story. Lace, embroidery, beading and metallic fabrics all change how a hat will look against your outfit. If your dress has a lot of texture or sparkle, a simpler hat can provide balance Matte sinamay sits well with satin and silk; subtle sheen can lift crepe and jersey Consider how any metallic threads or jewellery will catch the light alongside your hat Small amounts of shimmer in hat trims can echo beading or crystals without competing with it Coordinating shoes, bag and jewellery Your hat anchors your look, but your shoes, bag and jewellery complete it. Perhaps we don’t need everything to match exactly, but the tones should sit comfortably together. A bolder hat often works best with simpler shoes and a discreet bag A neutral clutch can quietly pull the outfit together without fighting for attention If your hat is richly embellished, keep jewellery restrained so the overall effect remains elegant Think about your hairstyle too – it should support the hat rather than compete with it At your consultation, you’re very welcome to bring your shoes, bag and jewellery so we can plan the whole picture. I'll often say to customers that if we can introduce a harmonious contrasting colour to the outfit in three places, then the overall look will appear elegant, considered and cohesive. These three points tend to be your shoes, the clutch bag at your hip, and the trim or colour base of your hat. Handmade Matching Accessories To help you create a polished Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom look, I also offer handmade matching accessories designed to coordinate with your Bespoke Wedding Hat, including silk-covered clutch bags, silk stoles and freshwater pearl jewellery. Each piece is made to complement your outfit beautifully, from silk opera-length stoles in one or two colours (plain or crystal embellished, with a discreet magnetic fastening) to clamshell clutch handbags in various sizes and finishes, and pearl necklaces strung to your chosen length with coordinating crystals. Practical colour considerations A few small practical points can make a real difference to how your chosen colours behave on the day. Colours often look lighter and softer outdoors than they do under indoor lighting Very pale tones can disappear in bright sunshine if there isn’t enough contrast Darker shades may feel heavier in photographs if everything else is light Seasonal light (spring vs winter) changes how cool or warm a colour appears Destination weddings will show colours in different ways to UK sunlight Although I have 'colour corrected daylight bulbs' everywhere in my studio, I often like to step into the garden with you so we can view potential colours in natural daylight if possible. How I help you decide in the Winchester studio Many mothers arrive feeling unsure about colour. My role is to guide you through the options calmly and clearly until we find a combination that feels right for you, your outfit and the wedding itself. We lay your dress, shoes and bag out together We compare hat materials and trims against your fabrics If possible we look at everything in natural light as well as indoors I suggest ways to blend tones or highlight an accent colour We consider how the outfit will look in photographs and throughout the day By the end of the appointment , you will have seen several possibilities and we will have decided together on the hat colour(s), trims and overall signature of the design, so that you'll be able to leave the studio with the utmost confidence, eagerly anticipating your return to collect your New Hat! If you’d like broader advice on choosing a Mother of the Bride hat, you may find my Wedding Hat Advice guide helpful. You can also explore my Bespoke Hat Portfolio and Ready-to-Wear Collection , or read more about visiting my Winchester studio for a consultation. Arrange a Consultation When I imagine a Mother of the Bride looking her best, I picture her in a hat that expresses who she is and elevates her outfit. Over the years, I’ve helped many mothers discover hats that make them feel special. It’s incredible how a well-crafted headpiece can pull everything together and add a touch of brilliance to a joyous occasion. Frequently Asked Questions Does my hat have to match my dress exactly? No. In fact, a softly blended or complementary shade usually looks more refined than an exact match. We can work within a family of related tones so everything feels harmonious. Can my hat be a different colour from my dress? Yes. A hat in a related tone or in a carefully chosen neutral can look very elegant. The important thing is that the colours sit comfortably together rather than fighting for attention. What if my dress has several colours? With a patterned dress, we’ll usually choose one or two colours from the print to echo in the hat. A neutral base with trims in a chosen accent colour works well. Can you work from photographs if I don’t have my dress with me yet? Good quality photographs and any fabric swatches are very helpful. Ideally, I like to see the dress in person before finalising colours, but we can begin exploring options together with photos. I'd like to wear the hat again. How do we plan for that? In that case, we might choose a versatile neutral or a colour that also suits your existing wardrobe. Trims can be designed to feel special enough for a wedding but still appropriate for future occasions. Looking for more answers? - How to Choose a Wedding Hat as the Mother of the Bride | Wedding Hat Advice
Expert advice on choosing a wedding hat as Mother of the Bride or Groom. Guidance on shape, proportion, colour and style from Winchester milliner Simon. How do I choose a wedding hat as the Mother of the Bride? Choosing a wedding hat as the Mother of the Bride involves balancing style, proportion and colour so your hat complements you, your outfit and the wedding style itself. I recommend selecting a design that flatters your hair and face shape, sits comfortably throughout the day and harmonises with your dress, shoes and bag. Soft, elegant shapes work well for most ladies, and neutral or blended colours are often more versatile. A one-to-one consultation in my Winchester studio will help you explore shapes, colours and trims with ease and confidence. Choosing a Mother of the Bride Hat: Clear, Helpful Guidance A well-chosen hat should feel like a natural extension of your own style. Over the years, I’ve helped many Mothers of the Bride discover designs that elevate their outfit and help them feel polished, elegant and entirely themselves on the Big Day. This guide brings together the key points to consider when selecting your hat, based on my experience creating Bespoke and Ready-to-Wear designs here in my Rose Garden Studio in Winchester, Hampshire. Book a Consultation Start with your outfit Your outfit is the starting point for every decision. When you arrive at my Winchester studio, I always begin by looking carefully at your dress – its colour, silhouette, and fabric – along with the accessories you plan to wear (such as shoes and a handbag). This allows us to design a hat together that complements your ensemble perfectly, rather than the other way around. Consider: What colour and accent hues are in your dress What story and atmosphere is your dress leaning towards The overall style, venue and formality of the wedding Any fabric pattern, lace trim or design embellishment (eg draping) The neckline and shape of the sleeves How do you plan to wear your hair on the day The drape of the fabric and how it moves The silhouette of the dress (eg column, A-line, tea dress, structured tailoring) Your shoes - especially the colour choice and heel height Style and colour of any jewellery or handbag you plan to have In which season is the wedding taking place If you plan to wear a jacket or pashmina in a complementary colour to tie-in with General principles that work well: Ornate dresses often suit simpler hats Sleek, understated outfits can take more decorative designs A wide, angled brim works beautifully with structured tailoring A delicate percher or fascinator/saucer flatters column silhouettes A soft, undulating brim complements a tea dress Once I understand these details, I can recommend hat shapes and colours that complement you perfectly, ensuring the hat never overpowers your look. It’s helpful if you can bring your dress, photographs/sketches, and fabric swatches so we can explore shapes and trims that coordinate effortlessly with your outfit. Choose a flattering shape A well-chosen hat enhances your natural features and balances your proportions. Different shapes suit different faces, but there are a few simple principles that help almost everyone. You may like to consider: Wide brims: elegant and dramatic, ideal for more formal venues Perchers or hatinators: flattering for most face shapes, creating height without overwhelming Pillbox hats: understated sophistication, perfect if you prefer a discreet style Asymmetrical brims: add visual interest and can slim or lengthen the face Perching styles work beautifully for many ladies, adding height and elegance without hiding your face Swept or asymmetrical brims can soften angular features and draw the eye upwards Rounded crowns and gentle curves flatter softer features and give a refined, feminine look Vertical trims, such as a lifted bow or feather, add height and energy Horizontal trims can add width or balance a longer face During your consultation, I will carefully position each hat so you can observe how shifting its angle alters both your posture and expression. I invite you to experiment with a variety of silhouettes. Even a subtle tilt can change the way a hat frames your face, enhancing or softening features, and adding height. Discovering your perfect shape can be a truly delightful surprise. Think about comfort and fit Your hat needs to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive at the ceremony until the last photograph of the day. I create and adjust each hat so it sits securely and feels well-balanced, without pressure points or wobbling. Confidently greet guests and embrace family without concern for your hat Remain comfortable during the wedding breakfast, even with a wide brim Avoid the need to constantly touch or adjust your hat in photos The elastic or band should provide a secure yet gentle fit Make sure the hat stays in place without any tightness Opt for lightweight materials on warmer days Reserve felt or velvet options for cooler weather Test the fit by walking, sitting, and turning your head Designs can be considered to accommodate glasses, wigs or hearing aids As the Mother of the Bride, you will greet guests, move around and pose for photographs. Your hat should stay comfortably in place and help you feel at ease throughout the day. Consider colour and tone Colour is often the part that feels most daunting. The good news is that perfect coordination rarely means an identical shade from head to toe. The most elegant looks usually come from subtle blending. Combine two or three related tones rather than a single flat colour Echo a colour from your dress in the trims or bow of the hat Use a soft neutral base (such as the background colour of your dress fabric) with stronger accents Avoid going darker than your dress unless we are making a deliberate statement Think about how the colours will photograph in natural daylight and how they flatter or shade your face Highlight an accent colour from a patterned dress - perhaps also echoed in your shoe choice If you’re having a dress made, order extra fabric for me to use in your hat so that the match can be exact When you bring your outfit to my Winchester studio, we can compare fabrics and hat materials under natural light in the garden, so you can see exactly how the colours behave in real life. Match the hat to the style of the wedding Your daughter’s wedding will have its own character – formal, relaxed, country, city, traditional or contemporary – and your hat should sit comfortably within that setting. Country and barn weddings often suit softer, romantic shapes with gentle movement Cathedral or church weddings can take a little more drama and height City venues and hotels often work well with cleaner, sculptural designs Summer garden weddings lend themselves to floaty, airy shapes and light colours Autumn or winter weddings, consider structured felt and velvet trims in natural colours I’ll always ask about the venue's scale, the time of year, and where the reception will take place, so we can be sure your hat feels appropriate as well as beautiful. Bringing everything together in your consultation A one-to-one consultation in my Rose Garden Studio here in Winchester is the easiest way to bring all these elements together. It is a calm, unhurried appointment where we can explore shapes, colours and trims until everything feels just right. During your consultation, we will: Look closely at your outfit, shoes and jewellery Try you in a selection of shapes so we can see what flatters you most Discuss how you feel about height, brims and angles Explore colour combinations under natural light Decide on different trim options - such as bows, curls, feathers or crystals Check the balance and comfort so you will feel secure wearing the hat all day Refine the final details and put your order in writing so that each of us can have a copy Ensure that you look amazing from every angle in your New Hat By the end of the appointment, you will know exactly which style suits you, allowing you to look forward to the wedding feeling confident, elegant, and completely yourself. My goal is to craft a hat that feels natural to wear, complements your outfit, and reflects your personal style. Arrange a Consultation Frequently Asked Questions Should the Mother of the Bride wear a hat? It is still very much traditional for the Mother of the Bride to wear a hat or headpiece, and many brides love seeing their mother in something special. A well-chosen hat completes your outfit and adds a sense of occasion, without drawing attention away from the bride. How far in advance should I choose my hat? Ideally, once you have your outfit. Bespoke hats usually take between six and ten weeks from consultation to collection, so it is wise to book your appointment as soon as you know what you will be wearing. What if I don’t feel like a “hat person”? I meet many ladies who begin by saying they’re not hat people. Once we find the right shape and angle, they very quickly change their minds. There is always a style that will flatter you – my job is to help you discover it. Can you match my hat exactly to my dress? I can work very closely with your outfit using layered sinamay, silk and carefully chosen trims. Often, we choose a softly blended tone that sits beautifully with your dress rather than an exact match, which looks more natural in photographs. Should the Mother of the Groom coordinate with me? You don’t need to match each other, but choosing colours that sit happily together works well in group photographs. Many families like to share outfit colours in advance to avoid surprises. - Royal Ascot Hats in Winchester, Hampshire | Marvellous Millinery
Bespoke Royal Ascot hats crafted in Winchester. Classic statement brims and playful headpieces, handmade by milliner Simon Meanwell-Ralph in Hampshire. What sort of hat should I wear to Royal Ascot? If you’re attending Royal Ascot and want to look “Ascot” in the best possible way, I will design and make a bespoke hat or compliant headpiece that suits your enclosure, outfit colours, and confidence level. I create everything from delightfully extravagant statement pieces to sleek, classic hats with timeless polish, all made in my Winchester studio with comfort and a secure fit in mind. Important ordering note for Ladies Day My spring/summer lead time is 10 weeks. As a result, I ask that all bespoke orders for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot be placed with me by the end of March, please. Arrange a Consultation Royal Ascot style has two Millinery Moods, and I love them both! Royal Ascot is one of the rare occasions where you can lean into millinery with proper joy. Some of my clients want an unapologetic celebration of colour, texture and movement. Others want a quietly confident, beautifully tailored look that feels classical and correct. I design for both, and I’ll help you choose which direction feels right the moment you put it on. I offer a wide range of exciting bespoke hat options that are available to order in hundreds of different colour combinations . The fun, frivolous, “let’s make an entrance” side of Ascot This is where millinery becomes pure theatre, most elegantly. If you want a hat that makes people smile (and earns you a few compliments on the lawn), I can take you in a bolder, more playful direction while keeping the finishing refined. Ideas I often explore for this look include: A harlequin flutter of colourful silk butterflies, dancing across the crown and brim An exaggerated oversized bow, sculpted so it looks dramatic but still beautifully balanced in photographs An abundance of hand-set crystals that catch the light as you move Exciting, jazzy colour combinations that pick up your shoes, bag, lipstick, or even a patterned dress For many ladies, this is the day to really go for it - Royal Ascot gives you the perfect excuse! The sleek, elegant, classically dressed side of Ascot If you prefer a more traditional look, I will keep the silhouette clean and the styling considered. Think confident lines, impeccable proportion, and colour-matching that looks intentional rather than “nearly right”. This approach often suits: A large statement brim in a refined colour story A smooth, elegant finish with a single beautiful focal trim A timeless shape that looks graceful from every angle, especially in photographs It still feels special. It just whispers rather than shouts. Perching button bases and pillbox styles, small in scale and big in impact I sell a great many perching button bases and pillbox-inspired styles for Royal Ascot, and they are far more versatile than people expect. They make a perfect springboard for drama because they sit neatly and comfortably, while allowing the trims to do the talking! In the Royal Enclosure, Ascot’s own guidance allows a headpiece or hatinator as long as it has a solid base of at least 4 inches (10 cm). All of my perching button bases for Ascot meet that minimum, so they can work beautifully even for very traditional clients who still want a compliant headpiece rather than a wide brim. Here’s why they work so well: Comfort: they feel light to wear and easy for a long day Practicality: they suit hosting or attending a private box, where space and movement can be limited Versatility: they can look sleek and minimal, or they can become the foundation for a showpiece And creatively, they are a joy. I can build them up with: Twisting trimmed feathers spiralling upwards for height and movement Festooned bows for impact without the bulk of a huge brim Crystals and sparkle to catch the eye with every turn of the head They are fun, practical, and surprisingly flattering. Dress code and enclosure guidance, without the stress Dress codes vary across the enclosures, so I always recommend checking the official guidance for your specific ticket before you finalise your outfit. If you tell me which enclosure you’re attending, I will design within the guidelines and steer you towards something that feels appropriate, comfortable, and unmistakably you. When should I order my Royal Ascot hat? As Royal Ascot is traditionally held in June each year, the best time to begin is early . It gives you far more choice and keeps the overall experience much more enjoyable. A sensible approach: January to February: get in touch and book a consultation in Winchester if you’d like one By 31 March: confirm your Ladies Day bespoke order (my firm cut-off) April onwards: I will complete your hat with enough time for calm final checks and collection If you’ve left it late, I can still help If you are inside my bespoke lead time during the spring and summer rush, I may not be able to take on a made-to-order Ascot commission. In that case, my ready-to-wear collection can be a lovely solution, subject to availability. A brief history of the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot The origins of the Royal Enclosure can be traced back to 1807 when an area was reserved exclusively for family, guests and the Household of King George III to view the first running of the Gold Cup. The Royal Enclosure as we know it today was established in the mid-nineteenth century when the Emperor of Russia, Nicholas I, visited Ascot for the first time as a guest of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. The concern raised from an impromptu descent into the Winners’ Enclosure by the Emperor, the King of Saxony and Prince Albert to examine the winner of the Queen’s Vase, prompted authorities to enclose the area in front of the Royal Stand in 1845. Excluding the Royal Stand, this area immediately became the most exclusive part of the racecourse. This excerpt reproduced here by kind permission of ascot.com Arrange a Consultation Royal Ascot is one of my absolute favourite events to design for . It has that wonderful mix of tradition, glamour and pure summer fun, and it gives me permission to be a little more daring with scale, colour and sparkle. I genuinely love the planning stage with my treasured customers, chatting through their plans, outfits and all those finishing touches that make their whole look feel “just right”. If you’d like to create something special for Ascot, I would be delighted to help you enjoy the build-up and arrive feeling beautifully dressed for the occasion. Frequently Asked Questions When is the latest I can order a bespoke hat for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot? My spring/summer lead time is 10 weeks, so please confirm your bespoke order with me by 31 March for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. If you contact me after that date, I may still be able to help, but it will depend on my studio schedule and the complexity of the design. Can I wear a perching button base or pillbox style to the Royal Enclosure? Yes. A perching button base or a pillbox-inspired style can work beautifully for the Royal Enclosure, provided it meets the dress code requirement of a solid base of at least 4 inches (10 cm). All of my Ascot-ready perching bases meet the minimum size, and I will always guide you so your final choice feels both correct and stylish. What is the most comfortable style to wear all day at Royal Ascot? Many ladies find a perching button base or pillbox style the most comfortable option, especially if they are hosting or attending a private box where space and movement can feel limited. These styles feel light to wear, sit securely, and still allow for dramatic trims such as feather spirals, sculpted bows and crystal details. Do you make dramatic “fun” Royal Ascot hats as well as classic ones? Yes. Royal Ascot is one of the few occasions where you can lean into millinery with real joy and exuberance! I make everything from sleek, elegant statement hats in refined colourways to playful designs featuring oversized bows, a flutter of colourful silk butterflies, hand-set crystals, veiling, and sculptural featherwork. I’ll help you choose a look that feels perfect for you, just with a little more pizzazz! Can you colour-match my hat to my dress, shoes and bag? Yes. Precise colour-matching is one of the most important parts of what I do. If you can bring your outfit to my Winchester studio, or share clear photographs (or post swatches), I will build a colour story that looks intentional and beautifully coordinated, both in real life and in photographs. I have my Ascot tickets but not my outfit yet. Should I wait? Yes, please wait until you have your dress, and ideally your shoes as well. I can only colour-match and choose the right scale once I can see the actual outfit you've decided on, so you'll avoid any guesswork and end up with a beautifully coordinated Ascot look. Do you have ready-to-wear hats for Royal Ascot if I’ve left it late? Yes, absolutely. I keep a small selection of unique ready-to-wear hats and perching styles available online, but availability changes quickly in spring and summer because I make only one of each. If you are short on time, it’s worth browsing my ready-to-wear collection in my Online Shop, and if you wish, contacting me for guidance on the most suitable option for your enclosure and outfit. If you are considering a bespoke or ready-to-wear wedding hat, I hope these reviews help you feel confident about what to expect. Photos of Happy Customers What My Customers Value Most Reading through these reviews, certain themes come up again and again - and they are the things I work hardest to get right for every customer. Colour-matching that looks “meant to be.” Many ladies arrive at my Winchester studio feeling uncertain about how to coordinate their hat with a block-coloured dress, a patterned fabric, or a soft, ‘in-between’ coloured outfit. By the end of the consultation, we have found a combination that works beautifully in natural light and will photograph elegantly on the day. Several reviewers kindly mentioned this as the detail that made the biggest difference. A comfortable, secure fit from the ceremony to the last photograph. A hat that wobbles, pinches or needs constant adjusting quickly becomes a distraction. I create every hat to feel balanced and light, secured with a discreet headband, comb, or hair elastic, so you can greet guests, embrace your family, and enjoy the whole day without giving your hat a second thought. Comfort is one of the most frequently praised aspects in these reviews. A calm, enjoyable consultation. I work hard to ensure that ordering your wedding hat is one of the enjoyable parts of the planning - an experience to be cherished. My one-to-one appointments at my air-conditioned Rose Garden Studio here in Winchester are unhurried and relaxed. You will work directly with me throughout, and many reviewers describe the experience as a memorable highlight. A truly individual hat. Because every bespoke hat is created specifically for one customer, you will never see the same design on someone else at the wedding. That sense of individuality - knowing your hat was made just for you - is something my customers mention time and again. Trusted by Mothers of the Bride and Mothers of the Groom Across Hampshire and Beyond Since establishing Marvellous Millinery in 2011, I have had the privilege of creating hats for ladies attending weddings and events across Winchester, Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and much further afield. Most of my customers travel specifically to visit my Studio for a personal consultation, often making a day or even a weekend of their trip, and a good number return for subsequent family weddings or Royal Ascot. I never take a personal recommendation for granted. When a customer tells a friend, family member, colleague or even her neighbour about their experience, it means the world to me - and it is the reason so many of my enquiries begin with the words, “my friend came to you for her hat, and she said I absolutely must come to see you too!” Share the Love New customers REALLY appreciate reading reviews—it's very reassuring and makes them feel confident about placing an order with me. General FAQs Bespoke Process FAQs Ready-to-Wear FAQs Hat Etiquette & Traditions FAQs Visiting Winchester FAQs Glossary of Terms FAQs About Simon FAQs Why do British women wear hats to weddings and events? Hats are part of a long-standing British tradition, especially for formal daytime occasions. A well-chosen hat finishes an outfit beautifully and adds that polished, timeless sense of occasion in photographs. When should wedding guests wear hats? Hats suit daytime weddings, garden ceremonies and church services particularly well, and they are especially popular for close family and top-table guests. Evening receptions tend to be more relaxed, so many guests remove hats after the wedding breakfast or before dancing begins. How long should I keep my hat on at a wedding? Tradition suggests that ladies keep their hats on for the formal parts of the day, including the ceremony, photographs, toasts and speeches. Later on, as the reception becomes more relaxed, guests often remove hats - although as a general rule not before the Mother of the Bride removes hers first! The aim is to feel confident, comfortable and fully present for the celebration. How do I choose the right colour for my hat? Start with a colour that flatters your complexion and complements your outfit. Neutrals can feel elegant and versatile, while bolder shades create a striking statement. Natural daylight is always best for judging colour harmony. For a simple, step-by-step approach, see Colour & Outfit Matching . I am a petite lady, can you suggest hats that might be suitable for me? Absolutely! For petite ladies, it’s important to choose a hat that complements your proportions without overwhelming your frame. Avoid Oversized Brims: Opt for medium or smaller brims to maintain balance and elegance. Perching Hats: These stylish, smaller designs add sophistication without overpowering your look. I have lots of samples like this in my Bespoke Hats Portfolio , and nearly all the hats in my Ready to Wear Hat Shop are in this style. Vertical Accents: Feathers or trims with height create the illusion of added height. Asymmetry: Asymmetrical styles draw the eye upward and balance proportions. Tailored Fit: A neatly fitted hat ensures comfort and avoids looking oversized. The key is: Choosing a hat that enhances your beauty, suits your style and feels comfortable. Together, we’ll find the perfect piece to make you feel fabulous on the big day! How do I coordinate my hat with my outfit? Choose one or two details from your outfit and echo them in the hat, rather than matching everything exactly. This approach looks refined and intentional, and it avoids the “overmatched” look. How can I feel more confident wearing a hat? Confidence usually comes as soon as you find a shape that flatters you and you become familiar with how it balances. Once it feels comfortable, it stops feeling like “a hat” and starts becoming ‘part of you’. Should the Mother of the Bride always wear a hat? There is no rule that says she must, but many Mothers of the Bride choose to because it feels fitting for the role and the formality of the occasion. A thoughtfully chosen hat completes the outfit and can feel wonderfully celebratory. If you decide to wear one, I would be delighted to help you find the piece that’s right for you. You might find the Hat Etiquette and Traditions page useful to read Can I re-wear a hat for different occasions? Absolutely. A well-chosen hat can work with a variety of outfits over time, so you can enjoy wearing it again for other weddings and special events. Are hats required for Royal Ascot? Yes, in certain enclosures, such as the Royal Enclosure. I design hats with those dress code standards in mind while still keeping comfort and creativity at the heart of the piece. What is the correct side to tilt a hat? Traditionally, ladies tilt their hats slightly to the right, framing the face attractively and allowing free movement. This small detail creates balance and helps the hat photograph beautifully.
